How to deal with novel genre

How to deal with novel genre

I am very thankful to Dr. Suhashini Jadhav, Dr. Dipal Damodare, Gajanan Malokar , Avinash Rade , Pravin Muley, Dr. Shubhra Roy, Suniti Moharil and Sunil Patil for guiding and inspiring to come with this write-up.

Students are very much concerned about the preparation of the novel genre for some reason. The major shift in this section of Novel Genre is that this is memory based. So far as students are used to writing answers from the extracts in the activity sheet itself. For these 16 marks there will be no help from the activity sheet itself. So thorough knowledge of all 4 items in this section is very necessary. Students should follow the guidelines to understand the novel genre. In the Activity Sheet activities on History of Novel are MCQ based. These activities are True/ False, Match the pairs, odd out, fill in the blanks, chronological order, complete the table, choosing the alternative etc. For completing the activities of True/False, Fill in the blanks, Choose the alternative, students should write complete sentences. Only options are not acceptable. To match the pairs, write pairs. Matching only alphabets and numbers is not acceptable. In chronological order use numbers in order 1234.

1. Reading of the novel extract twice is essential.
 2. Think about the happenings in the chapters of novel ie. plot of the chapters.Try to narrate important events.
 3. Point out places and occurrence of events there. Look for the time ( year, season, period) references. Think about its relation with the story. It will help you to understand the setting of the novel.
 4. Point out main characters, know their physique and qualities.Every fictional character has one dominant disposition, along with subsequent or supporting character traits. Usually there are two ways to understand a fictional character - what he does and what he says. Along with this, what he says about himself, what other characters say about him, how are his reactions to the events and actions in the novel, these things also help us to understand the character. Try to find out strength and weaknesses of the characters.

 5. Point out important dialogues and their speaker, their effect ( change in thinking, working, turning the novel etc.). Find out the use of uncommon words, sentence/s, phrases etc (language ). Focus on the language used there.

 6. Focus on the central idea of the novel and extract. Try to know what the narrator wants to tell.

7. Identify the type of novel.... 'To Sir With Love' autobiographical novel, 'The Sign of Four' detective novel 'Around the World in Eighty Days' adventurous novel .

8.Find out the twists and turns in the novel (conflict ). Try to know about the inner struggle of the character and also struggle between two characters.

9. Study the impact and influence of events/incidents/language/even characters etc on the readers (you).

10. Point out references where the reader ( here the student ) is motivated/ forced/ compelled to read the full length novel.

Home again, I see him drinking weak tea,
Eating a stale chapati, reading a book.
He goes into the toilet to contemplate
Man's estrangement from a man-made world.

The cold water running over his brown hands,
A few droplets cling to the greying hairs on his wrists.
His sullen children have often refused to share
Jokes and secrets with him. He will now go to sleep
Listening to the static on the radio, dreaming

Dilip Chitre was a celebrated bilingual poet. He was a translator with a remarkable work in Marathi and English.

The poem ’Father Returning Home’ is taken from ‘Traveling in a cage’- by Dilip Chitre. It draws a portrait of a suburban father as commuter.

The poem depicts dull and monotonous routine of father. The father is alienated in his home. His children refuse to share their joys and sorrows with the hardworking father. This painful loneliness is a symbol of man’s isolation from the materialistic man-made world.

The poem has no regular rhyming words and rhyme scheme. The poem is divided into two stanzas. In the first stanza the vivid description of father as a commuter draws the attention. In the second stanza his painful loneliness at home is shown. Simile, alliteration, onomatopoeia and synecdoche, transferred epithet are the striking figures of speech used in the poem.

The underlying message of the poem generation gap in the modern age has created disrespect for the elders. In spite of all the odds the father devote his life for the children.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paraphrase:

The weavers start their weaving at the morning (rise of a day). The poetess compares the cloth with the blue coloured wing of a wild halcyon and asks the weavers why they look so happy while weaving the garment/cloth. In response, the weavers answer that they are weaving a dress for the new born baby so they are so happy. Here, break of day is metaphorical used for the birth and the first phase of human life which is a happy moment for everyone including the weavers.
The weavers continue their work during fall of night (evening). The poetess compares the garment/cloth with the purple green coloured feathers of a peacock and asks again the weavers why they are weaving so shiny garment/cloth. In response, the weavers answer that they are weaving a bridal veils of a queen so it’s fresh and bright. Here, fall of night is metaphorical used for the adulthood and the most important second phase of human life. It is a phase of merry days that brightens every aspects of human life.
The weavers carry out their work during the cold moonlight also. But their mood is serous and silent. The garment they are weaving is white. The poetess very ingeniously compares the white garment/cloth metaphorically with a quill and a also with a white cloud. The poetess asks again the weavers why they are weaving the white garment/cloth. In response, the weavers answer solemnly that they are weaving that white cloth for a dead body for its final rites (cremation). Here, the phrase ‘cold moonlight’ is metaphorical used to the final phase of human life i.e. death which is eternal truth.
The poetess has used two metaphors in the last stanza to compare the white cloth. Within that the metaphoric use of the phrase ‘white as a cloud’ needs deeper interpretation as if the white cloud (cloth) finally shrouds every dead and takes away it to its ‘Final Destination’ or ‘Final Rest’. The last two lines create the feelings of pathos in minds of the readers, the poetess and the weavers.

Answer:

I: Hello Rajesh! How are you?

Rajesh: Hello Tushar! I am fine. I have just come from the four-day journey from Goa. Arnav was also with me.

I: Yes. I couldn’t join you this time. How’s your travelling? Did you both enjoy it?

Arnav: Yes. Really travelling gives you immense joy. We both enjoyed a lot.

Rajesh: If we feel to refresh ourselves; travelling is necessary. We should take some time from our busy schedule and go for travelling.

I: Yes. I agree. Travelling refreshes our mind and soul but sometimes we don’t get good experience if our planning is not appropriate.

Arnav: Its true. If we make a good plan and arrangements, we will get good time to visit special places, to buy different and unique things and to feel the strength of the nature.

Rajesh: Yes Arnav. These are the real benefits of travelling. One thing I want to add is that travelling gives us new experience and confidence to tackle different situations.

I:  I agree. Travelling is the best media to learn different things. We get knowledge of historical places, religious places, culture of the land and custom and traditions of different area.

Rajesh: True. OK. Next time do join us for new trip. Bye.

I:   Yes. OK. Bye Rajesh. Bye Arnav.

Arnav:  Bye.

------------------------------------------------------

Section I – Prose

Q.1 (A)  Read the extract and complete the activities given below.   (12)

Tiger Hill towers majestically above all other mountaintops in its vicinity. Although located almost 10 kilometers north of the Srinagar-Kargil-Leh highway, the enemy position on this mountaintop dominated parts of this highway. After the recapture of Tololing and the adjacent features, evicting the enemy from this well-fortified position became a priority.
As the sharp triangular top of Tiger Hill was clearly visible from the highway, and appeared almost impossible to capture, the media had projected the entire episode as a national challenge.
Brigadier M.P.S. Bajwa, commander, 192 Mountain Brigade, assigned the mission of capturing Tiger Hill to 18 grenadiers, now rested and recouped after their achievements at Tololing and Hump, and to 8 Sikh, which was already deployed at its base. Both these units were assisted by a crack team from the High Altitude Warfare School, with maximum possible artillery, engineering and other combat support.
Throughout the last week of June 1999, 18 Grenadiers probed to establish the extent of the enemy’s defenses and to scout for suitable routes for the assault. A simultaneous multidirectional assault emerged as the best strategy. The commanding officer of 41 Field Regiment drew up an elaborate artillery fire plan. Individual guns were ranged so as to cover each objective. Bofors guns were used in a direct firing role once again, with inspiring accuracy. On the day of the assault, nearly 120 field and medium guns, 122-mm multibarrelled Grad rocket launchers and mortars rained death and destruction on the enemy at Tiger Hill. The Air Force, too, targeted Tiger Hill on 2-3 July, and hit the bull’s eye several times during its missions.
For the first time in India’s military history, a TV channel covered the battle live: a sign of progress and transparency, not to mention the on-screen depiction of confidence. The Tiger Hill feature extends about 2200 meters from west to east and about 1000 meters north to south. The main extension is towards the west, on which there are two prominent protrusions. The first, approximately 500 meters west of Tiger Hill, had been named ‘India Gate’, and the second, ‘Helmet’ (located another 300 meters away). Approximately one company of 12 Northern Light Infantry (Pakistan) held the whole feature.

I have mentioned the names of some of the great ones of those times. One of the greatest of these, I have not yet mentioned. His name was Socrates. He was a philosopher, always searching for truth. To him, the only thing worth having was truth and he often discussed difficult questions with his friends and acquaintances, so that out of the discussions truth might emerge. He had many disciples or chelas, and the greatest of these was Plato. Plato wrote many books which have come down to us, and it is from these books that we know a great deal of his master, Socrates. Evidently, governments do not like people who are always trying to find out things: they don`t like the search for truth. The Athenian Government- this was just after the time of Pericles- did not like the method of Socrates, and they held a trial and condemned him to death. They told him that if he promised to give up his discussions with people and changed his ways they would let him off. But he refused to do so, and prepared the cup of poison, which brought him death, to giving up what he considered his duty.

Sitting in a porch way cool,
Sunlight, I see, dying fast,
Twilight hastens on to rule.
Working hours have well-nigh past.
Shadows run across the lands:
But a sower lingers still,
Old, in rags, he patient stands.
Looking on, I feel a thrill.
Black and high, his silhouette
Dominates the furrows deep!
Now to sow the task is set.
Soon shall come a time to reap.
Marches he along the plain
To and fro, and scatters wide
From his hands the precious grain;
Muse I, as I see him stride.
Darkness deepens. Fades the light.
Now his gestures to mine eyes
Are august; and strange; his height
Seems to touch the starry skies

That the visage or countenance had not a Nose,

'On the whole it appears, and my argument shows,
With a reasoning the court will never condemn,
That the spectacles plainly were made for the Nose,
And the Nose was as plainly intended for them.'

Then shifting his side, as a lawyer knows how,
He pleaded again in behalf of the Eyes:
But what were his arguments few people know,
For the court did not think they were equally wise,

So his lordship decreed with a grave solemn tone,
Decisive and clear, without one if or but-
That, whenever the Nose put his spectacles on,
By daylight or candlelight-Eyes should be shut!
